Shannon Forrester, a young mother of four kids, just wasn’t quite busy enough, so she decided to attend a convention with her sister-in-law who had just bought the rights to Floor Coverings International for Regina and Southern Saskatchewan- Canada. FCI is North America’s No. 1 flooring franchise. This was in January of 2016.
Cut to January of 2024, and Shannon has just returned from FCI’s annual meeting with a Franchisee of the Year award. How you ask?
“I come from an Entrepreneurial family and am a bit of a serial Entrepreneur” Shannon said. “I had owned other businesses in the past. I had previously owned four Curves for Women fitness franchises with my mother, as well as Day Spa in my 20’s. When I met and my husband, we decided to buy into a spray foam insulation company as well as a healthy vending machine company. When my sister-in-law approached me to work with her, I had just had our 4th child and had been at home as we had sold our last business before the baby was born. I had wanted to take some time off to be with the kids.”
Floor Coverings International owners are required to hire a Design Associate and that was the role Shannon was going to play for her sister-in-law’s new business. “I think realizing that I loved my four kids and my time at home, but not everyone is meant to do that. It is important for women to know that. It’s ok to love your family but also love your career and know that you are good at it and meant to do more,” Shannon shared. Sage advice indeed.
“I really liked being a Design Associate for FCI. It’s a role that is creative as well as you get to help people see the 3000 plus flooring options to choose from with our mobile showroom. We went right to their door, and I always looked at their paint, their furniture style and asked if they had pets or kids. We had just built a new home and I wished that I could have had this same help -so I was very enthused by this whole concept. And the floors! They are gorgeous. We sold and continue to sell a lot of luxury vinyl plank- its durable, waterproof, and family friendly. Being from a rural province we work with a lot of farm families, so this is important. Warm neutral white oak floors are extremely popular in our area.”
Cut to a year later and in November of 2017 Shannon bought the business from her sister-in-law.
“I just loved all of it. I think being a part of other successful franchise companies helped me to understand how to work with the franchisor and be successful myself. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. You need to take the resources provided and then use them to the best of your abilities. And Floor Coverings International and their resources and customer service emphasis wowed me. I am good at and enjoy networking and building relationships. Within our community, it’s definitely the way to grow. I believe that ability is what has set me apart from others.”
Future plans?
“When I began with FCI I had already been a part of and sold 7 companies and when I bought this business, I thought that was what I would do again. Buy it. Grow it. Then sell it. That was my 5-year plan. I'm going into my 7th year, and I don't see an end date anytime soon. I love what I’m doing and the company I’m with.”
