After working for several years at retailer Kohl’s, Shelly Koelper applied at Paul Davis Restoration of Northeast Indiana. “When I left Kohls, a great company, I was looking for a position that would allow me to help others and would also be a challenge. I was drawn to this position because the customers who need Paul Davis Restoration services are people who are really in need, and I was ready to do that kind of satisfying work,” said Shelly, who now is the Owner and General Manager of this Paul Davis Restoration of Northeast Indiana.
The road to ownership is an interesting tale. “I was hired Sept. 2013 to be the first CFO for this office. The office had been growing and expanding and the owner needed someone in this new role so he could focus on other areas of the company. Over the years my role grew to include first the management of the mitigation department and later to also include managing the marketing department. At some point my title changed from CFO to GM as finance became a smaller percentage of what I spent my hours on, and other business activities started to demand more of my time. By 2018, I became a partner. By Dec. 30th of 2021, I became the sole owner.”
Shelly Koelper also proudly became the first winner of the Paul Davis Cup in 2018 – the most prestigious award of the whole organization. The recipient is personally selected by President and CEO Rich Wilson. It recognizes a team that consistently delivers the company’s Vision, Mission, and Values and a team that showcases outstanding performance. Led by manager and owner, the team is also involved in initiatives that benefit the whole company, not just their particular franchise.
As a mentor, many employees of Shelly’s have gone on to rise in the company and some have also gone on to pursue a larger role in the restoration industry, such as becoming an insurance adjustor. In one such case the exit interview conducted pointed to the person’s admiration and gratitude to Shelly for encouraging them to be the best at what they do and shoot for their dream career, as she had in the beginning.
This role of mentoring is very important to Shelly and she has lots to do daily as Manager and Owner.
“I think my main duties are setting goals for Paul Davis Restoration of Northeast Indiana; helping to create the path that will allow our team to attain those goals; ensuring that necessary change happens along the way whether that be a minor tweak or a major shift; empowering the leadership of the company and supporting the employees as they serve our customers.
My day is never the same. I strive to accomplish as much as I can in a day while ensuring I have taken the time to thank and uplift those employees who have gone above and beyond. I attempt to make an appearance at many of the meetings to be supportive of the group, to offer any insight I might have, and to make myself available for conversation. If a problem or issue has been identified, I gather a group of employees together to discover the hows and whys and then to find a solution to close a gap so that same issue can’t come up again.
I work to strengthen, challenge, and encourage the employees to elevate themselves to be the best they can be. Training and coaching an employee to feel their success gives them the encouragement needed to achieve even more. There is nothing greater than watching that smile of amazement and satisfaction on an employee’s face when they realize what they have accomplished.”
Support and balance from home is also a major part of a successful life. Shelly has been married for 35 years and said, “my greatest pleasure in life has been watching my three children use their God-given talents to find their own passions in life and to see how their genuine compassion for others plays out in their chosen careers. I also have two grandsons who bring a smile to my heart every day.”
