It’s not easy being a woman, especially if you’re trying to juggle a marriage, kids, and a thriving business. Melissa Goldring, co-founder of The Vital Stretch, makes it look easy. A Physical Therapist, Goldring and her Chiropractic Physician husband and partner, Robert, have opened five multidisciplinary practices across Connecticut. As if that wasn’t enough, they created The Vital Stretch (TVS) Method to help improve the lives of their patients. Here’s a glimpse into her busy life, and a few of her tips on finding work-life balance.
What’s your background?
I’ve been in the outpatient orthopedics field of physical therapy for 25 years, treating a wide range of conditions and injuries in patients of all ages.As Director of Physical Therapy in our Norwalk multidisciplinary office (Advanced Health Professionals), I treated patients and oversaw our team of physical therapy assistants and aides.
Why did you create The Vital Stretch?
After years of treating problem-focused care on body parts like knees, shoulders, and the back, Rob and I realized there was a need for a full-body wellness approach. Leaning on our research and experience, we incorporated assisted stretching into our patients’ programs. We created TVS as a method to help them get the most from their therapy. We didn’t intend for it to become a business in the beginning, but the method was so successful that we turned it into something larger in 2018.
Has owning a business been rewarding?
It has been an amazingly challenging and intensely gratifying experience to start a wellness business from scratch. Plus, this was a big sidestep from running the insurance-based multidisciplinary business we were used to. There was definitely a learning curve. To nurture and grow TVS and then take the knowledge and expertise I gained and award it to a franchise partner is beyond satisfying. To have other people believe in me and the business that I have helped to grow is a huge accomplishment. I take that responsibility very seriously.
What advice would you give to other women hoping to start their own business or own their own franchise?
Women are known for being able to balance lots of things at once – we are resilient! My best advice is to stay organized and be strategic in building your team. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. We’re all superwomen, but it’s important to ask questions of those who have traveled this path before you. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and learn new things. It’s amazing how much growth you can garner by stepping up and doing things you never knew you could.
Before deciding to start a business, get educated and consult a mentor. Having someone to guide you through the different aspects of owning a business is priceless. You should fully understand the commitment involved and make sure you can dedicate the time and energy needed to be successful before getting your hands too dirty. We turned to other franchise owners for advice. They’ve traveled these very twisty roads before and have learned the ins and outs of starting and maintaining a business. Their help has been invaluable, as has the guidance we’ve received from coaches in the franchise space.
As a mom and business owner, how do you find balance?
As a mom to teenagers, it’s imperative that I take time for myself. As they say on airplanes, it’s essential to put an oxygen mask on yourself before helping others. Carving out a little me time every day is how I can stay balanced in my body and mind, not to mention safeguard my sanity! My favorite ways to relax include reading, walking, and exercising.
Is it possible to leave work at work when you’re married to your TVS co-founder?
Have you ever tried to work with your other half? It’s not always easy! That’s why dedicated, non-work time with your partner is imperative. To ensure our relationship stays strong, Rob and I schedule weekly date nights. It’s difficult to avoid talking about work, so we try to distract ourselves with activities we enjoy doing together. We listen to music and cook something together to unwind. We also enjoy watching a great series or movie, as well as hanging out with our kids and dogs, of course. They don’t let us talk about work, which is a good thing.
