The Institute for Women’s Policy Research recently found that in both the “Carpentry” and “Construction” sectors, less than 3% of employees are female. In an often male-dominated home improvement and repair industry, leaders like Colette Bell are looking to reverse this trend.
As Co-Founder and VP of Franchise Development for the company she built with her husband Andy back in 1998, Colette has played a pivotal role in evolving what began as a humble operation in their basement into a full-blown franchise model that would be acquired by Ace Hardware in 2019. Known today as Ace Handyman Services, the brand has grown to become the home repair industry’s largest handyman service franchise under Bell’s visionary leadership.
The inklings of the business started in the Bells’ suburban home as they were venturing into parenthood. With a baby on the way, the couple found themselves overwhelmed with the number of projects around the house that needed to get done. After numerous calls and messages, they couldn’t find a reliable handyman who would communicate effectively, show up on time, and get the job done correctly. Noticing a gap in the market, the two decided to launch their own handyman business that would focus on customer service, ethics, and integrity.
In 1998, Colette and Andy launched Handyman Matters in three different locations across Colorado. After quickly seeing success and a steady flow of business, they expanded their services to three additional locations in California.
Eager to explore new avenues of growth, the Bells found themselves drawn to the world of franchising. While at the time they admittedly knew nothing about franchising a handyman business, they recognized franchising as a means to adapt a business concept to local communities and embarked on this journey with an open mind and an eagerness to learn. Their decision was particularly fitting for the handyman industry, where personal connections and community ties hold significant value. Colette and Andy understood the importance of these connections, realizing that customers seek familiarity and trust when selecting service providers in their neighborhoods. In 2001, Colette and Andy evolved Handyman Matters into a franchise model. Through franchising, Handyman Matters grew from six to 119 territories. Today, Ace Handyman Services has 388 territories across 47 states. Each location offers a range of reliable and experienced craftsmen capable of handling diverse home improvement projects such as fencing, painting, carpentry, drywall, bathroom renovations, flooring, door installations, and more.
As a business owner today, what sets Colette apart is her commitment to quality work and prioritizing human connection in the repair business. “When you hire a handyman, you’re inviting a stranger to come into your home,” says Bell. You want a relationship with your handyman - someone you can trust.”
Earlier in her career, Bell was a school teacher and her husband worked in the restaurant industry. Despite neither having a background in construction, their shared passion for serving others became the foundation of their business philosophy.
Today in her role as Ace Handyman Services’ Co-Founder and VP of Franchise Development, Colette remains committed to community-focused leadership and nurturing a safe space for employees. With first-hand experience venturing into an unknown business venture, she understands the importance of supporting her employees. “Our model is really about team building appreciation of our employees,” says Bell. She acknowledges that providing love and care to AHS franchisees will make for a positive work environment, and that experience will translate to their customers.
Bell loves that AHS franchisees build off of their respective communities, and all support one another to succeed. “One thing about franchising is that you’re in business for yourself, but not by yourself,” explains Bell. “The culture around franchising is very inclusive. Everybody’s pulling together to help each other grow. We make each other better, which is what franchising is all about.”
This collaborative mindset also encouraged Colette to venture into franchise consulting. Before the Ace acquisition of Handyman Matters, Colette’s burning desire to give back to her communities led her to consult with emerging brands, sharing her business experiences and insight to help others start their businesses off strong.
Ace Handyman Services has since grown to become the go-to franchise in the home repair space thanks to Bell’s dedicated leadership. Her journey from founder to overseeing the brand’s growth signifies her remarkable business acumen, unwavering commitment to customer service, and dedication to employee well-being. Her legacy extends beyond the success of the franchise; it is a beacon for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, who are looking to challenge norms and carve their own path in male-dominated industries.
