Building a Legacy of Compassion: Charletta and Larry Thomas’ Journey With A Place At Home
In the heart of the Acadiana region of Louisiana, you can find Charletta and Larry Thomas, owners of A Place At Home — Lafayette. Showing compassion and helping others drives the husband and wife in their entrepreneurial journey, but taking care of others is nothing new to them.
There was no other business opportunity out there that they wanted to invest in besides senior care. They recognized the growing demand for in-home care needs for the more than 10,000 Americans who turn 65 daily. But they also know firsthand what goes into caring for loved ones and the challenges of finding quality care. Larry is not only an Army veteran, a member of the local Honor Guard, and a member of the local VFW chapter, but also the youngest of 17 siblings. As a teen, Larry helped care for his brother, who had quadriplegia due to an offshore injury. More recently, he continues to care for and help hire compassionate caregivers for his elder siblings.
“Through our experiences, we understand caregiving is a task for anyone, even if you’re family, and so that’s our ‘why’ in this entrepreneurial journey,” said Larry Thomas. “We came into this business with the mission to help others in our community through their aging journey.”
Charletta and Larry bring a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to their franchise, with over 40 years of combined experience in leadership, military service, and the hospitality industry. As an Acadiana native, Charletta understands the local needs greatly. Their territory serves a wide area, including many small rural communities that larger providers often overlook.
At the heart of their franchise journey is the caregivers. Charletta’s take on hiring caregivers is a bit different from that of other in-home care providers. She’s working to hire quality caretakers in the same area as the clients, so it’s not only top-notch care but also accessible even in the rural parts.
“My number one goal is to cultivate an effective team of compassionate caregivers that are close in proximity to our clients,” said Charletta Thomas. “We’re hiring people that aren’t just looking to receive a paycheck, but for those who go into a house as if it’s their own mother or father to care for.”
In addition to Charletta and Larry’s focus on serving the rural population, A Place At Home guides clients through the aging journey in its entirety. The brand offers four senior-focused care services, including in-home care, care coordination, senior living alternatives, and staffing solutions for senior communities. This not only helps clients navigate the challenging transitions of aging but also offers multiple revenue streams for franchisees.
“We see A Place At Home as a ‘catch-all brand’ that can address various needs. Whether it’s recovering from a knee surgery or needing long-term care, we’re here to help.”
Charletta and Larry see the biggest reward in their franchise journey as being part of an organization that allows them to help others. They chose franchising for its support and structured system, allowing them to focus on what truly matters — caring for their community.
A Place At Home provides franchise owners with a proven five-step track to opening and growing their businesses. From the discovery day process that ensures franchisees are the perfect fit for the brand to helping owners expand their territory after years of success, the support team at A Place At Home corporate is there to walk with owners every step of the way.
As the Thomases look forward to the future, their primary goal is to help central Louisiana families maintain a quality of life for their loved ones, a mission deeply personal and reflective of their own experiences. Their advice to anyone considering a senior care franchise is to be patient and put your heart into it.
“Everything else will fall into place if you remain steadfast in your goal to provide exceptional service,” explains Charletta.
